Cheat-Scanner

Third party anti-cheats are nothing new to the Counter Strike community. For years we have seen people take small stands against the cheating that plagues our games and from these we have seen some major developments. We have however seen projects fall by the wayside; abandoned and for all intensive purposes, useless. It is a sad trend that has given hope to the large cheating community by reassuring them that cheating is still ok and that consequences are a distant and unlikely occurrence. For all the problems and failures, trials and retrials, we in the anti-cheating community have lost some ground, and gained some; the balance remaining reasonably level. But today, I forecast a change.
For four years a project has been in the works. The project, simply named “Cheat-Scanner” was the brainchild of GOCP, currently a university professor in the UK. Everything started when his clan, like many others, became tired of cheaters and sought a remedy. The product of this frustration was Cheat-Scanner. In its early stages, it lacked the follow-thru needed to make it big. That, in conjunction with the real world requirements of some of its staff, brought about roughly a year of downtime for the scanner. However, the break was short-lived and the project started moving again. All things said and done, the scanner has been back for a while now, and is growing beyond belief. With its dedicated staff and increasing support in the community, it has us all hopeful that an end to cheating is within sight. Its awesome ability to detect cheats and its simplicity of design make for a winner on the front lines against cheating. I am totally comfortable forecasting this to be the next big thing in both the cheating and anti-cheating worlds.
The basic premise relies on an application that searches the would-be cheaters PC for Half-Life and Half-Life 2 based exploits. It determines the existence of an exploit based on a database of known cheat files amounting to some 7,500 and growing. Upon detection it outputs the results of the scan to one or several IRC channels wherein an admin deciphers the results. The scanner outputs detections in two ways: positive matches and possible matches. If a positive match is found, a ban will surely follow; whereas possible matches are examined by the reviewing admin. If the possible match or matches are found to be cheat related a ban may then be issued. All said and done, it’s a simple but effective scanner.

My optimism is based not entirely on what has been done, but what will be. I had the chance to speak with three people very close to the scanner in an interview today. Gizzy, the project CEO, and two users of the scanner all met me on my TeamSpeak server for a chat. Gizzy and I talked about the functionality and history of Cheat-Scanner as well as future plans. When asked about the possibility of some major things happening (Cheat-Scanner becoming a server-side plugin among others) Gizzy replied, “Never say ‘never’”. From the users, Killerhawk and Fnugie (currently active in the fight against cheating in Denmark) I got nothing but praise for the scanner. Killerhawk made his feelings clear saying, “Masterpiece. Best [anti-cheat] seen in CS for a long time.” Fnugie then briefly describe her experience with Cheat-Scanner saying, “We heard of the scanner, and said, that’s what we need!” She went on to give me an idea for what the scanner has been doing to aide her efforts. She reported that to date, of some 232 scans, 60+ returned positive matches for cheats.
Having heard these reviews, and having tried the scanner myself extensively, I am fully confident in its functionality. The next step from here, which is already underway, is to consolidate the data from the scans to create a master ban list and a list of “clean” players. With these lists, admins can protect their servers and crosscheck Steamids against the “clean” list before asking players to scan, thereby decreasing the need for excessive scanning of any one player.
This project is leaping forward to say the least. If this progression continues, the world of public cheating may be in for a very rude, and long delayed, awakening. I am extremely excited to see what developments are made and encourage everyone interested to get involved. Whether that means using the scanner in your own community, sharing your knowledge and skills, or simply donating to the project, you won’t be wasting your energy. I watch in anticipation of what’s to come, and am confident that this is not to be another abandoned and useless project, but rather a major development that will continue to improve the gaming world.

Cheat-Scanner
Best [anti-cheat] seen in CS for a long time”(”Mesterstykke. Bedste anti-cheat set indenfor CS i lang tid”). Fnugie beskrev derefter kort hendes erfaringer med cheat-scanneren:”We heard of the scanner, and said, that’s what we need!”( Vi hørte om scanneren og sagde;”det er det vi behøver!”).
