"Counter Hack was created because Paladin-X, and other players, were frustrated with cheaters on servers and people accusing other people of cheating without proof. With the goal of providing accurate and useful information to gamers, Counter Hack has grown into the information powerhouse it is today." - http://www.counter-hack.net/∞
A brief note from someone who has been around for some time: It's interesting you draw the distinction between hacking a singleplayer (contained within your own machine) game and a multiplayer (part of the network) game. To me, this goes back to the fundamental rule of hacking: you have a power not granted to others, thus you must wield it like a knight. According to your own standard of honor you interact with the world, and it soon becomes apparent that your behavior reflects what you're made of. Weak people who fear being able to compete are cheaters, but hackers in the oldest definition are people who hack to find new challenges and surmount them, to find new learning and most of all, perhaps, to return the "fun" to technology.
"You bet your ass we're all alike... we've been spoon-fed baby food at school when we hungered for steak... the bits of meatthat you did let slip through were prechewed and tasteless. We've been dominated by sadists, or ignored by the apathetic... This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch, the beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without paying for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering gluttons, and you call us criminals. we explore..." - The Mentor [ TextFiles∞ ]
For me, the biggest charge in a game is being in the "feedback loop" between user and machine that William Gibson recognized in observing a young person playing a video game. The user is connected to the machine, and in competition with it, like predators and prey, heat and cold, water and dryness in nature. To get better is to be in some way more a master of your environment, even if only its virtual part. This was the original skill of hacking, which involved NOT becoming like everyone else and only motivated by the green paper doggy biscuit which signified the ability to be independent. Just be independent, and while you're at it, do everything you need to do for money with grace and not fear.
Taking this into gaming, let's start by saying that a multiplayer game is more than just a program running on some distant machine. It's a virtual world where people interact in play, they chat realtime and initiate acquaintances which extend far outside of the simple shapes and plastic-bright colors world of video games. To go into this community with an artificial immunity means that you cannot learn from it, and you will interrupt the learning of others. Because you have little interaction with the other users, you don't grow and they don't grow. A dead end, like being only concerned about money and forgetting what is important in life: nature, people, and your own character.
