Wall Hacks

There are three major types of wall hacks: Transparent, Partial Transparent, and Sprite. Each one has a different method of achieving the wall hack effect of seeing people through walls. This gives the cheater the advantage of knowing were the enemy will be so that it's easier to kill them without them killing the cheater first. In Counter-Strike it gives the cheater the advantage of shooting through walls with powerful guns to kill the enemy.

Transparent

Transparent wall hacks make all the walls on a map transparent, usually about 50% transparent. It is like having a window with a small layer of frost, you can see through the window partially, but you can also see the frost so you know where the window (or in a game the wall) is.

Hackers achieve this effect by several methods, usually either replacing the OpenGL32.dll file in the windows system files, or they “hook” the OpenGL32 file when it is loaded into the memory, altering its information to achieve this effect. This wall hack method is harder to use for cheaters unless they know the map well, because it is harder to tell if your are actually shooting someone through open space, or through a thick wall, and navigating the map is hard. Usually these wall hacks do not have an aimbot included, which forces the hacker to use their skills.

Partial Transparency

Partial Transparency wall hacks make only certain objects transparent. Most hacks that "hook" the Half-Life game engine use this method. In the picture, all the walls are solid, but you can see through the bridge.

Things such as doors, ladders, bridges, and usually anything interactive within the map that aren’t “walls” are transparent. Most hacks that use this method have other cheating methods included such as Aimbots, ESP, Speed Hacks, etc. This method is easier to use for cheaters, since they don’t get lost as easy.

Sprites

The Sprite Method is simply an only let what you want to see be seen through the walls. This method edits OpenGL files and the memory to allow player models, and other things that are not walls, to be seen through walls.

See the hostages? Unlike the Transparent method, it shows only hostages through the walls. This is the most effective wall hack, since the cheater knows where the enemies are and the cheater doesn't see everything else behind the wall.

Autoaim/Aimbots

An Aimbot is a program or script that aims at the enemy for the cheater. There are three different styles of Aimbots: Colored Models, Engine-Aim, and XQZ Style. Each method has a unique style of accomplishing the Aimbot effect. Aimbots are cheats because it has the computer aim for the cheater, and gives an extremely unfair advantage for the enemy, and is illegal in gaming leagues.

Colored Model

This type of aimbot was one of the very firsts, and was not very effective. The cheater would have to change their player models to models that were one color only, usually bright red for the terrorist team, and bright blue for the counter-terrorists. After the models were installed, they would run a program in the background of Half-Life. That program would scan the screen for that color of red or blue, and if it saw it, it would move the mouse over it. Not only was this ineffective, but you were more likely to aim for the foot then the head, and sometimes you would aim for parts of the map that matched the color. Anti-Cheaters created sprays with those colors, and sprayed them on walls, and if people had their crosshairs stuck on the spray, they would ban them. There has not been a hack like this for over a year, and doubt there will ever be one like this again for Half-Life.

Engine-Aim

Engine-Aim and XQZ Style are similar in a lot of ways. Engine-Aim hacks usually “hook” into the Half-Life game engine, like a positive virus. It doesn’t alter any of the gaming files usually, but instead it modifies the memory in your RAM Half-Life runs on. From there the hack has information about the current game you are in, including the location of an opponent’s head. The hack uses this information to aim for your, hence they name Engine-Aim, using actual game data to aim for the cheater. This style of Aimbot is very dynamic and customizable. The hack can watch for players anywhere around the cheater, including right behind the cheater, turn 180 degrees and kill the enemy, or only aim at players close to their crosshairs, to help lower suspicion about the cheater’s hacking.

XQZ Style

The XQZ Style gathers game data and uses it like Engine-Aim, except the user has to press a button to aim, usually the right mouse button (mouse2). This style gives more control for the cheater, so if players are suspecting them of cheating, they can stop quickly. XQZ Style was used before Engine-Aim, but many more experienced cheaters like the XQZ Style.

Extrasensory Perception (ESP)

With the evolution of Wall Hacks and Aimbots, ESP features the next generation of hacks, since cheat programmers are always looking for new ways to enhance their hacks. ESP stands for Extrasensory Perception, they help the cheater know where other players are and give information about those players. ESP is usually only an additional feature while the Aimbot is the main feature of many hacks. There are several types of ESP's.

Radar & Map ESP

In the Half-Life modification Counter-Strike, at the top left corner of the screen is a radar. On it, during a normal, game, is displayed the location of all your teammates, hostages, and the bomb. The Radar ESP adds the location of the enemies too. It doesn’t have the location of every opponent, but when an enemy gets close, it shows up. With the integration of map overviews with CS 1.5, new hacks allow a small version of the map to be added to your screen, displaying the location of teammates and enemies.

Glow ESP

Glow ESP helps see enemies better by making them glow different colors. Usually they glow according to their respected teams, or for what weapon they are using. AdminMod allows a glow function, when it is activated it lets the player choose what color the player would like to glow, this is not a hack but a server plug in, don't get them confused.

Text ESP

Hacks that hook the gaming engine can gather information about players: Their name, health, armor, and other variables in the game. The Text ESP takes that information and displays it over the player, usually the color of the text representing the team.

Notice how the text is displayed over walls, so the cheater may not be able to see the enemy through the wall, but he knows where the enemy is. This hack is more dangerous then Wall Hacks, since it helps prevent the cheater from looking through the wall directly at the cheater and is harder to catch in first person spectator mode. Weapons, bombs, and grenades can also have text to be shown, but most of the time it is just clutter on the cheaters screen, and is not a threat to the cheater.

Smoke & Bang Hacks

In the Half-Life modification Counter-Strike there are three types of grenades: High Explosive, Smoke Grenade, and Flashbang. The HE Grenade causes damage, but the other two impair the vision of the player. There have been hacks made to counter the visual effects of these grenades.

Anti-Smoke Hack

Smoke Grenades release clouds of smoke that are very opaque, making it very hard to see through them, giving cover, or restricting vision. Most new hacks that hook the Half-Life engine prevent the smoke from being displayed.

Every non-cheating player will see the smoke, but the hacker won’t. Many cheaters surround themselves in smoke grenades, and shoot players from the smoke clouds, even though the players being attacked can’t see the attacker.

Anti-Flash Hack

The Flashbang in the Half-Life modification Counter-Strike blinds players who are in its area, friend and foe. It causes a bright flash of light, and slowly fades away. The Anti-Flash Hack filters this out, so seven Flashbang's could go off in front of the cheater and they can still see through them. Note: Sometimes a Flashbang should blind players and it doesn’t, so if you see someone who should be Flashbanged, but isn’t, don’t automatically assume they are cheating; it’s a widely known glitch in the modification.

Crosshairs

In some Half-Life modifications like Day of Defeat and Counter-Strike, certain weapons do not have crosshairs, such as un-zoomed sniper rifles, or some crosshairs don’t show exactly where the middle is, like Day of Defeat crosshairs. Most hacks that hook the Half-Life engine put their own crosshairs, showing exactly where the center of the screen is.
