Diablo II, and its expansion pack, Lords of Destruction, has been one of the most played Role-playing Games on-line. Unique in many ways, hackers and cheaters have tried to take advantage of Diablo II to gain unfair advantages. Unlike First-Person-Shooters, these games test the skill of your character, not the skill of your mouse and keyboard reaction times. There have not been a great variety of hacks with Diablo II like some First-Person-Shooters games like Half-Life: Counter-Strike, but several of the Diablo II hacks are just as unfair and dangerous.

Chat Room Display Errors

Ever been in a channel where you stumble upon a Hardcore character that is dead, and they don't have any Character Icon showing at all? Or, during extreme lag, players show up with odd levels such as; 255, 183, -67? A lot of newbie's like to think that players with these attributes hack. However the truth is rather simple. Its all merely a display error. If you ever happen to see players with the above attributes in chat rooms, don't fret, and
don't accuse them of cheating, many of them are just as confused as you as to how they ended up like that.

Map Hacking

This particular hack has never been stopped by blizzard, this Hack involves the Program decoding the Map files as they are sent to your computer then the program displays everything on the Automap. All players will tell you that the hack is not a REAL hack. And people who play Hardcore consider the hack the ONLY WAY TO PLAY. Blizzard has threatened to BAN any player who uses the hack.

Duping

Patched / Protected
Blizzard has pretty much stopped this, but every now and then someone finds a way to dupe, which works for a couple days, then is shut down for a few weeks or months. To get a better list of DUPED items to look for go to The Dupe Guide∞.

Item Grabber

Not Patched / Working
Well this one is pretty self explanatory, it's set to pick up certain items when they drop. This can be annoying on Cow games if you are the one who always finds things and someone just runs by and grabs the items.

D2Hackit

Not Patched / Working
This tool pioneered the world of hacking. It allowed the user to load modules to perform automated functions as well as view received packets and send others. It was this tool that was used to load a great majority of other hacks, which in turn, had one of the biggest effects on the game. It is also undetectable, but is otherwise useless unless there are people out there willing to create the modules that make this tool truly potent.

PindleBot and/or Shopbot

Not Patched / Working
This is more of a script than a real hack, this just makes your character continuously kill a high item dropping monster, it will make a new game kill the same monster over and over and pick up anything good it drops. Blizzard has stated that they do not allow this, and in fact someone who's acc was deleted e-mailed tech support and was told that blizzard banned any accounts that were active for more than 1 day straight.

Trade Hacking

Prosecuted by Blizzard
Trade Hacking came in many forms, but usually has the same underlying theme. The most primitive method involves a player sticking up an item to trade, then for some reason (e.g.; My inv is full, hold on . . .) leaving, and re-entering the trade, and sticking up another item, that is of much less value, with the hopes that the original person doesn't notice, and takes the bait. This of course can be easily spotted, and is made even more obvious when the item the player trades for is smaller than the item they are giving, meaning there would be no way they wouldn't have room for the item. More advanced versions of this involved a player using a program such as Fake Items, that would create an Image of the item they were trading for, but when the player did in fact trade for the item, they would discover that they actually got NOTHING. This method could be detected easily, because in most cases the player had to leave and rejoin the game for the 'fake item' to appear, the item would be there right when the trade was opened, and last, the player couldn't move the item around in the trade screen. Later versions did allow the player to move the item around, but there was still one way to get around it; Because this worked on the same principal of duping (without actually finalizing the dupe), the first person to leave the game was the one to lose the item. So, if you traded for the 'Fake item,' all you had to do was keep the item in the game until the original person left. This would make THEM lose the item instead, and therefore, be a legit trade. These methods were patched along with the Dupe methods, and many players were detected and banned for Trade hacking.

Scamming

Prosecuted by Blizzard
If someone tells you to drop your armor and he will drop his too - don't bother It's a scam - the guy wants to GAIN your trust, so he hopes you drop something great, then he (most likely a sorcerer) teleports to you and steals your item that is on the ground. There is also another scam involving Duping if someone tells you that they will teach you to dupe or hack a item, do not bereave them, they just want to steal your stuff. This usually involves you filling up your inv then, him killing you, then you grab your corpse, he kills you again, and this causes your body to explode and all your items fall on the ground and then he proceeds to steal them. Another Scam is the - HEY TO GET A NEW DUPE HACK GO TO - then they give you a link to some website that contains a so-called dupe or MF program, but' when you run this program it makes your character drop all his items then drops you from the game, or makes it so you can't pick them back up. ALWAYS CHECK ITEMS IN TRADE BEFORE THE TRADE, people do try and trick you, as the Storm shield looks the same as a Dragon shield.

Drop hack

Blizzard doesn't care
This isn't really a hack, more of a virus, and doesn't help the player that inadvertently uses it. Instead, when the player enters a game, it makes the player drop all of his items, then either boots him out of the game or makes it so he can't pick them up again. Painful stuff. The catch? It's downloaded, so it's either disguised, or is a virus in other programs (probably hacks). If it is the Drop Hack, instead of something like a Map Hack, then anyone who uses it gets their just desserts. Blizzard doesn't really care too much about this hack, and it's probably the result of some programmers who've turned to attacking the ones who use illegitimate hacks. Counter-hack applauds them, in that case.

Ads in Channels

Just plain evil
These are just Spam bots that spam websites that usually have Duped/Hacked items on them. They try and sell these items for real money.

Bugged Items

Still in game, but the methods to make them are patched
These are items that are the SAME item in general, but the stats for it are really different. Like the Bugged Stone Of Jordan Ring, which gives the ring the same attributes as the Oculus Swirling crystal. People seem to think that these cannot be removed because the ITEM# is still that of a Stone Of Jordan. (there are other bugged items, for more check the duper site, they list a few)
image

"ITH" Items

Methods are patched, items still in game
ITH items were a odd thing from 1.08, people found a way to socket a item with a rune word then - remove them and add more jewels or something. Case in point - ITH col Blades - the max dmg is like 500, much to high for any normal Col blade. Blizzard has been banning/deleting users of such items, if you see one write down the persons account and let blizzard know, if viewed in the Map Hack, the item is known as - Stupid ITH.
image

Account Robbers

Blizzard Prosecutes
not really a hack, just people exploiting newbs, in channels never type your account/password, you can type your account, as long as you do NOT give out your password, even to the ones that say We are resetting all characters in 5 min, want to keep your account then /w *diablobnet accountname/password. Just - Never Give Out Yor Password Ever.

Data Character Storage

Not Patched/Working
Allows you to change your character's stats, skills, experience, class, name, and items. Waypoint and difficultly level changer. Quest and cow level editor.

Blizzard's Stance on Hacking

Hacking and cheating on Diablo II is extremely difficult since 99% of all gaming information is stored on Battle Net. Hence, most cheating on Battle Net servers are exploits and bugs in Diablo II that give you an unfair advantage and not programs you run on your computer. Currently, Blizzard, the creators of Diablo II, has done a wonderful job of stopping all cheating on Diablo II. A while ago, "duping" was a huge issue, where players would duplicate their rare items using exploits in Diablo II’s net-code. However, Blizzard did not let this continue. Once the duplicating started to get out of control, Blizzard set up a patch that went over all the player accounts with a microscope. All duped items were erased, and patches were installed to prevent other duping outbreaks. Also, Blizzard’s system of player information is so secure it is next to impossible to hack your character to god-like powers. Cheating is almost non-existent in Battle Net with Diablo. However, it is very possible a new bug will be found and exploited by untrustworthy players. To help prevent these hacks from being spread, Blizzard has set up an anti-hack e-mail address all problems can be addressed to: hacks@blizzard.com∞. Also, you can submit hacks to Counter Hack at hacks@counter-hack.net∞, and we will report it to Blizzard, as well as test and document the hack or exploit ourselves.
Final Notes

Check the F.A.Q. section concerning hacks with Battle Net. It was written by Blizzard, and demonstrates their policies and standards with cheating and hacking.

If you ever happen to see players with the above attributes in chat rooms, don't fret, and don't accuse them of cheating, many of them are just as confused as you as to how they ended up like that.

This hack can also be used to see several screens away from where the player is. This can be used for a barbarian to jump/attack several screens away. Other spells like the soccerer's blizzard can be used on areas several screens away.

Duping

Patched / Protected
Blizzard has pretty much stopped this, but every now and then someone finds a way to dupe, which works for a couple days, then is shut down for a few weeks or months. To get a better list of DUPED items to look for go to The Dupe Guide.

PindleBotPindleBotPindleBot

PindleBotPindleBotPindleBot

Account Robbers

Blizzard Prosecutes
not really a hack, just people exploiting newbs, in channels never type your account/password, you can type your account, as long as you do NOT give out your password, even to the ones that say We are resetting all characters in 5 min, want to keep your account then /w *diablobnet accountname/password. Just - Never Give Out Yor Password Ever.

GateCrasher

Working
The purpose of this program is rather simple. Given a game name it will continue to try passwords untill either it finds the correct one, you stop the program or you get tired of running it. This program has almost *NO* error checking!! It is very easy and quite possible that lag will cause this program to crash.

To help prevent these hacks from being spread, Blizzard has set up an anti-hack e-mail address all problems can be addressed to: hacks@blizzard.com. Also, you can submit hacks to Counter Hack at hacks@counter-hack.net, and we will report it to Blizzard, as well as test and document the hack or exploit ourselves.

Final Notes

Check the F.A.Q. section concerning hacks with Battle Net. It was written by Blizzard, and demonstrates their policies and standards with cheating and hacking.
  • All of these are current on BattleNet.
  • None of these Hacks are patched as of yet.
